Guías de Revisión del Instituto CLAS

Si usted ha tenido la oportunidad de investigar los Materiales de la sección de CLAS, esperamos que haya encontrado una variedad de recursos para compartirlos con colegas y familias en su comunidad. Algunos de esos materiales han sido revisados por el proyecto CLAS, para que el contenido cultural y lingüístico sea apropiado. Le pedimos tome en cuenta que; algunos de estos materiales serán más útiles o apropiados que otros, dependiendo de la familia o proveedor de servicios al que vaya dirigido. Así mismo deberán tomarse en cuenta los antecedentes culturales y lingüísticos de la familia y/o proveedor de servicios.

Siendo que la selección de materiales apropiados es tan importante –y tan difícil-le sugerimos que primero conozca su audiencia. Una manera de hacerlo es conocerse a sí mismo y qué tanto distinto es de las familias y los niños que usted sirve. Es importante darse cuenta que sólo algunos materiales cubrirán las necesidades específicas de los individuos en su comunidad. Muchas veces tendrá que hacer adaptaciones senailas de los materiales antes de usarlos. Por está razón estamos incluyendo algunas sugerencias para seleccionar materiales que podrían interesarle.

Basados en el trabajo del Instituto CLAS, hemos desarrollado una series de Guías de Revisión para ayudar a los practicantes a seleccionar materiales cultural y lingüísticamente apropiados en las siguientes áreas:

Después que usted consideró su audiencia, las Guías de Revisión están designadas para ayudarle a determinar la congruencia entre creencias, valores y prácticas de las familias en su comunidad y las prácticas actuales recomendadas en educación inicial y/o preescolar y educación especial inicial.

Cada grupo de Guías de Revisión le ayudarán a considerar en su totalidad la eficacia de la presentación del material, incluyendo si la información es fácil de seguir, y hasta que punto las gráficas, las ilustraciones o fotografías son apropiadas para la audiencia promedio. Las Prácticas Recomendadas por la División de Educación Inicial y Preescolar (Division of Early Childhood) (DEC) de 1996 fueron usadas como guía y marco de referencia para desarrollar las Guías de Revisión, por más de 100 expertos y profesionales de diversos antecedentes culturales y lingüísticos en el campo de educación inicial y/o preescolar/ educación especial, educación bilingüe y educación para sordos.

Se ha prestado especial atención en considerar asuntos de diversidad cultural y lingüística, además un grupo de Guías de Revisión está disponible para ayudar a seleccionar materiales que han sido traducidos de un idioma a otro.

Las Guías de Revisión fueron creadas teniendo en cuenta los mandatos actuales de IDEA (1997). Esperamos que use estas Guías de Revisión para estimular un diálogo significativo con colegas y familias de su comunidad, tanto como para decidir, que materiales va a usar en su lugar de trabajo con educación inicial y/o Preescolar..

CLAS Review Guidelines

If you have had a chance to search the CLAS Materials section, we hope you have found a variety of resources to share with families and colleagues in your community. Many of these materials have been reviewed for cultural and linguistic appropriateness by the CLAS project, but you may want to keep in mind that some of these materials may be more appropriate or useful than others for families and service providers from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Because selecting appropriate materials is so important--and so difficult--we suggest that you first get to know your audience. One way to do that is to get to know yourself and how you differ from the families and children whom you serve. It is important to realize that few materials are likely to match the exact needs of individuals in your community. In many instances you may wish to make some simple adaptations to the materials before using them. We have included several suggestions for choosing materials that you also may wish to consider.

Based on the work of the CLAS Institute, we have developed a series of Review Guidelines to help practitioners select culturally and linguistically appropriate materials in the following areas:

After you have considered your audience, the Review Guidelines are designed to help you determine the congruence between the beliefs, values, and practices of the families in your community and current recommended practices in early childhood education and early childhood special education.

Each set of Review Guidelines will help you consider the overall effectiveness of presentation of a material, including whether the information is easy to follow and the extent to which the graphics, illustrations, or photographs are appropriate for the intended audience. Using the 1996 Division of Early Childhood's (DEC) Recommended Practices as a guiding framework, over 100 experts and professionals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in the field of early childhood/special education, bilingual education, and deaf education, were utilized to develop the Review Guidelines.

Special attention was given to considering issues of cultural and linguistic diversity, and a separate set of Review Guidelines is available to help select materials that have been translated from one language to another. The Review Guidelines were created with the current IDEA (1997) mandates in mind. It is our hope that you will use these Review Guidelines to stimulate meaningful dialogue with families and colleagues in your community, as you decide which materials to use in your early childhood setting.
